Women who have their babies at AVH benefit from low nurse: patient ratios (often
1:1) during labor and
delivery. AVH nurses are familiar with a variety of non-interventional pain management
techniques, including aromatherapy, massage, and water therapy.

Preparation for the big day is also part of the AVH experience, with childbirth education classes given by certified childbirth educators and offered one evening a week for four to five-week sessions. Topics covered in AVH’s childbirth preparation classes include the anatomy and physiology of childbirth, what to expect during normal labor and delivery, pain management options, cesarean sections, breastfeeding, and newborn care.
Also offered are:
Mind,
Body, and Baby - an early pregnancy class for mom focusing on nutrition and
fitness.
V.I.P Sibling Class - For children ages 2-8 and their expectant
parents.
Infant and Child CPR - Taught by certified instructors.
Breastfeeding Preparation - Can be taken either prenatally or after
baby's birth. Taught by certified lactation counselors.
Many of the perinatal nurses and childbirth educators at AVH are Lactation Specialists. The hospital’s lactation program assists new moms who may need the expertise of these specialists to guide them through breast feeding problems or difficulties.
