Health Screening Guidelines for Men
Age-appropriate screenings are essential for discovering diseases and disorders at the early stages when they are most treatable. Use the following as a guideline for healthy adult men.
- Blood pressure: Every 1- 2 years
- Cholesterol: Every 5 years
- Prostate screen: Age 50, via digital rectal exam and prostate specific antigen (PSA) blood test; begin screening earlier if family history of prostate cancer or of African-American heritage
- Testicular self-exam: Monthly
Thyroid: Those over age 45
- Glaucoma: Annually
- Colorectal cancer: At age 50, then annually
- Sigmoidoscopy: Every 3 - 5 years after age 50
Immunizations:
Diphtheria/tetanus: Booster every 10 years
Pneumococcal vaccine: Every 5 years, beginning at age 65
Influenza: Annually, beginning at age 55
Anyone with a personal or family history of disease should consult with a physician to determine individual testing and immunization ages and frequencies.
